biography

John Doddato (b 1949) is a fine arts photographer who has explored various aspects of photography for over forty years.  He worked with a large format film camera using the classic darkroom process devoting his energies to creating finely crafted black and white images.  His latest work continues in the same style using the digital process.  His interest in the natural landscapes has led him to explore the rugged terrain of the American Southwest and to photograph Native American ancestral sites in the remote canyons of the Colorado Plateau.  Some of his recent work has been focused on the indigenous people in the rural mountain areas of central Mexico.  His primary subject has long been to photograph the natural landscape and makes up a large portion of his body of work.  John’s style has been influenced by studying the works of Adams, Weston, and other great photographers.  Some of his formal training has been working with John Sexton as photo assistant at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass, Co.  His photographs have been displayed in solo and group exhibitions throughout the Northeast.  A large portfolio of John's gelatin silver black and white prints of the American southwest is held in the permanent collection of the Rockwell Museum in Corning, N.Y.  His work has appeared in numerous publications, and is held in private collections in several countries.  He has won best of show in several juried art exhibitions for his photography.  John taught photography for adult education classes and conducted private darkroom lessons at his studio.  His credits also include professional industrial and architectural photography as well as professional sports photography.  Many of his color landscape photographs can be found in tourist and promotional publications.
