Storm on the Prairie
In the fall of 2024 we made a trip to the prairie lands of Canada and central U.S. to camp and photograph. Our travel took us through four states and the Province of Saskatchewan Canada. We tent camped our way around in remote locations to see the rural landscape and numerous towns that were abandoned after the R.R. left the area. This region has always been skipped over in our many years of travel. We were always drawn to the more exotic locations with spectacular landscape features to explore. After our trip we came away with a new appreciation of the prairie lands with the beauty they hold and the history of a farming culture.
We had a couple of nights during our trip where we were forced to find a hotel for the night because of the fierce thunderstorms that blew through the area we were in. This image was taken during one of these storms. I have a lightning tracker on my phone and I could see this storm was going South to North and was a good 20 miles away from my location. I set up my camera on a tripod and programmed my camera to do 30 second time lapse exposure with 1 second between exposures. A 30 second exposure allows for multiple lightning strikes to appear in a single image. Once you determine your base exposure for the night scene you just let the camera fire off 30 second exposures until the storm has move by. The fun part about travel photography is you never know where the open road will lead and what new images will be made.
